Website nearly ready

A Philosophy Poetry Challenge -With great prizes!

I've decided that enough is enough: there are a number of intellectual pursuits that I simply can't get my head around: calculus and pholosophy are two that spring to mind imediately. While 'm sure that I can overcome my calculus block on my own I fear that there is no chance that I will ever be able to sit down and read the works of Schopenhauer, Hegel, Nietzsche or Lacan...

Gems of knowledge such as this by Lacan are a mystery to me: A geometry implies the heterogeneity of locus, namely that there is a locus of the Other. Regarding this locus of the Other, of one sex as Other, as absolute Other, what does the most recent development in topology allow us to posit?

Unless I can get my head around this I fear that the likes of Slavoj Zizek and Jacques Derrida will simply remain tedious pricks with no more relevance to the world than Jordan.

I therefore need help to overcome this block. Readers are therefore asked to explain philosophical concepts in verse form. All forms of verse are acceptable but the shorter the poem, the better - Haikus are particularly welcome!

There will of course be prizes for the best poems. The winner will receive a copy of the collected novels of Flann O'Brien. Second prize is the Third Policeman on audio book (read by the actor who played Bishop Brennan in Father Ted!).. Also up for grabs are three copies of the Poor Mouth (The novel that gave this blog its name)

All you need do is leave your poem as a comment... or poems, - you can enter as often as you like! . Closing date is 31 JanuarySource URL:

Sue this Jeff Koons!

Pregnant in Paris

This weekend, my mom dug out a bunch of old photos from when she was pregnant with Lucy and me. They were so much fun to see. My parents had just moved from the U.S. to France, and they thought they were having just one baby (they didn't expect twins!). My mom described what the experience was like...

"When we moved to Paris, I was already pregnant and very excited," my mom told me. "We went to French restaurants every night and explored Paris and surrounding towns on the weekends. During the day while Dad worked, I would walk through Le Vésinet, a beautiful residential district, to St. Germain en Laye, where I would have tea and a croissant and write letters home. Some days I would go swimming at a public indoor pool on the way back. I had a fitted black maternity suit--very sexy and French! Once on the way home, I was craving a hamburger, so I stopped for lunch. It was delicious. As I left the cafe, I saw a poster with an outline of a horse, saying that the special of the day was hamburger a la cheval!"

"During my pregnancy, Daddy and I called the baby 'Freddie' and whenever we visited a gorgeous French cathedral--Notre Dame, Chartres--we would always light a candle for 'Freddie.' "

"In early January, I was eight months pregnant. My belly was quite big, and my doctor was worried that something might be wrong. Dad was on a business trip, so I went alone to the Hôpital Américain de Paris for a sonogram...

"I was lying on my back with the cold jelly on my belly and the technician said, 'Je vois un bébé.' I smiled, and he kept working. Then he said, 'Ooh la la! Je vois deux bébés.' I was stunned! Twins! He kept working and then he exclaimed, 'Mon dieu, je vois trois bébés!' Triplets! He was a bit flustered and wanted a second opinion so said he was going to get a doctor and left the room. I lay there thinking, 'Hmm. I only have two arms, but I am going to have three babies!' When the two doctors came back, they took another look and finally said, 'Madame, you are definitely having two babies only!' I thought, 'Only two! That'll be a cinch!' Later I wondered if they had worked some clever psychology on me..."

"When I left the hospital that afternoon, I was so excited. I passed a little shop and spotted this cute mouse doll with two mouse babies! I bought it, and when I met Dad at the airport the next day, I gave it to him. He was perplexed and just looked at it (Why was I giving him a stuffed mouse?). Then it dawned on him, 'Oh my gosh! Are you serious?' He was shocked but thrilled. The next week we lit candles at a church for 'the Freddies!' "

(Next I'd love to share a few from after we were born, if you'd like to see...:)Source URL:

Jeff Koons claims ownership of all balloon dogs

    Art according to Jeff Koons

There is art I love, art that leaves me cold and art I downright hate. The work of Jeff Koons falls into category three. Koons is called a master of kitsch in my view he is a peddler of shit.

Koons has stolen inspiration from other artists and has been taken to court. An example is the case of Rogers_v._Koons where photographer Art Rogers sued the “artist” over his creation of a sculpture that was a remake of his photo a string of puppies. Koons lost, was forced to had over the last of the series of sculptures and make a substantial financial settlement.

Now it seems that Loons has the gall to take legal action against a company for copyright violation.

Koons has been creating shiny balloon dog sculptures that sell for idiotic prices. Toronto manufacturer Imm-Living produces plastic bookends, which vaguely resemble his balloon dogs for $30.

Lawyers representing Koons have filed cease-and-desist letters against the firm and the San Fransisco gallery Park Life which sells the bookends.

The owners of the San Francisco gallery, Park Life, have responded, claiming that it is impossible for anyone to copyright the canine shape. "As virtually any clown can attest, no one owns the idea of making a balloon dog, and the shape created by twisting a balloon into a dog-like form is part of the public domain," Park Life's counter-lawsuit said.

It is clear that Jeff Koons in an arsehole and his lawsuit is utterly frivolous. I hope that it is laughed out of court. That said the critics who faun over his crap and the people who buy it are bigger arseholes by far,Source URL:

Happy birthday, Lucy!

Birth of a Nation

The provisional results of the referendum concerning the independence of Southern Sudan have been announced. The results give a clear message: an overwhelming vote in favour of independence – nearly 99%

Of more than 3.8 million ballots cast, less than 15,000 were for continued unity. International observers had earlier stated that the vote was largely free and fair.
Anywhere else you see these kinds of numbers, you're going to cry foul," said one Western diplomat who travelled to Sudan to observe the vote. "In this case, we're pretty confident that that is pretty much exactly the reflection of the voters' wishes."

The results are still preliminary until finalised in Khartoum early in February. South Sudan will split from the north on July 9, according to the timetable laid down in a 2005 peace deal that ended the civil war between Sudan's north and its south.

The vote was the final part of the agreement ending a civil war, that took the loves of around two million people and lasted for almost forty years.

Here’s wishing the people of Southern Sudan peace and prosperitySource URL:

Anne Hathaway in Marni: tragic or cute?
These pictures of Anne Hathaway at a press screening of Rio, an animated film in which Anne has done a voice.

This is not the prime minister, is the selection process, so no need to wear their best clothes for Anna or something. And maybe the problem - it's like Anna with "random" team games.

I mean ... Marni Rachel Zoe get this up and down it? Or not entirely Anna? Really, really want to think they chose a sweater.

It's like a version of the high culture of the 90's something, would have led to Freddy Krueger.

And the pants would be nice ... in another situation. How, without the sweater.

But I can not hate Ann. She is beautiful and talented, and Rachel Zoe stops to put on the worst shit I do on the Internet.

I have high hopes for her and James Franco at the Oscars - as owner, I think he was surprised at the end of each of us and eliminate the park, press a thumb. URL:

I know I have been silent on recent events in Tunisia and Egypt, partly because I have been preoccupied but mainly because there are plenty of people out there who can analyse the state affairs much better than I ever could.

The turn on events has come as a huge surprise to me. Who would have thought that the self immolation of a street vendor not much more than a month ago could have precipitated all of this? I don’t believe that this has been orchestrated by the West regardless of the Telegraph’s revelation . Nor do I believe that they are an Islamist front.

The protests appear to be the release of a hell of a lot of pent up anger, be it unemployment, spiralling food prices, anger with corrupt and repressive leaderships/Sometimes all it takes is a single spark to light the fires of anger. Mohamed Bouazizi seems to have ben just that spark (apologies if the metaphor is inappropriate given his form of protest).

Where will this end up? Who knows. I hope to hell that it leads to better things for millions of people who people who deserve so much.

There is a serious risk that fundamentalists like the Muslim Brotherhood could hijack the protests. That is something that will be, to say the least, unwelcome (a huge understatement!). But this by no means inevitable.

We can only see what happens. This is for the people of Tunisia and Egypt (and, and, and) to sort. Here's hoping that it leads to better things for them.Source URL:

Millenary hand-wound Minute Repeater with Audemars Piguet escapement

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Millenary hand-wound Minute Repeater with Audemars Piguet escapement.

    Audemars Piguet
Indication of the time, initially created to “tell” the time in the dark in an age when electricity had not yet been invented, is the oldest of all horological complications. Audemars Piguet has made it part of its fundamental identity, by creating minute repeater and grand strike models right from the time of its founding in 1875. The new Millenary Minute Repeater model is in direct line with this tradition. This exceptional watch with its oval case and three-dimensional architecture reveals the essentials of its refined movement: a new AP escapement, a double balance-spring, as well as the striking mechanism and its gongs. The result is a genuine visual delight.

Perpetuating a line of exceptional watches
Drawing upon the time-honoured know-how cultivated by Audemars Piguet, the new Millenary Minute Repeater is enriching a classic and sculptural collection that already includes such exceptional models as the Tradition d’Excellence N°5, MC12, Deadbeat Seconds and Carbon One watches. Endowed with hours, minutes, seconds and minute repeater functions and equipped with a winding system specially developed for its hand-wound Calibre 2910, the Millenary Minute Repeater – like its illustrious forerunners – is a concentrated blend of expertise, technical sophistication and innovative materials. Its titanium oval case provides an atypical stage-setting for a truly magnificent sight featuring offset gold subdials inviting the observer to plunge into the mechanism’s deepest secrets. The AP escapement, the double balance-spring, as well as the hammers and the striking gongs, all become the key players of a truly three-dimensional creation.

The striking mechanism is the oldest of all complications. As early as the 15th century, certain pocket-watches already sounded the hours in passing, whereas quarter-repeating mechanisms striking the hours and quarters on demand appeared in the late 17th century. These watches endowed with a mechanical memory and which initially served to tell the time in the dark are now one of the greatest demonstrations of horological expertise, and the exclusive preserve of a few rare movement manufacturers.

A complication inscribed in the brand genes

At the time of its founding in 1875, Audemars PIguet already made minute repeater and Grande Sonnerie (or grand strike) models. As time went by, it added other complications, such as a perpetual calendar and a chronograph, as well as a power-reserve indication in 1885. The experience thus acquired enabled it to make the first minute repeater wristwatch in 1892. This masterpiece of miniaturization lastingly inscribed this complication in the brand’s genes, to the extent that in the late 1980s, when there was no more research on these models that had sadly fallen into oblivion, Audemars Piguet became one of the first manufacturers to revive this genre.

The new Millenary Minute Repeater is entirely in line with this longstanding tradition, while adopting the latest technological breakthroughs developed by Audemars Piguet, starting with the new AP escapement. As an essential component in the smooth running of a watch, the escapement serves to sequence the linear energy transmitted by the barrel. Drawing inspiration from a mechanism created in the late 18th century by a watchmaker named Robin, Audemars Piguet developed a new escapement combining the high efficiency of a direct-impulse escapement with the reliability of a Swiss lever escapement. The watchmakers in Le Brassus thereby succeeded in reducing the energy losses and in eliminating the need to lubricate the pallet-stones. This groundbreaking technical development in turn enhanced rating accuracy, long-term stability and shock-resistance.

    A sophisticated device
Conceived, developed and produced by Audemars Piguet, the new hand-wound Calibre 2910 driving the Millenary Minute Repeater is also distinguished by the atypical construction of the regulating organ. The latter is composed, not of one balance-spring, but of two balance-springs placed top to tail. This flat opposite-facing double balance-spring system boasts numerous advantages: it ensures automatic compensation for potential poising flaws; eliminates the need for the “overcoil” terminal curves of so-called “Breguet-type” balance-springs, which are always very tricky to make; and also does away with the imprecision resulting from the vertical position of the watch without needing to resort to such a sophisticated device as the tourbillon. All these special features serve to ensure finer adjustment of the balance-and-spring assembly oscillating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour.

The two movement barrels guarantee an exceptional seven-day power reserve. A third barrel dedicated to the striking mechanism is two and a half times larger than normal, and enhances the regularity of the note. Finally, in terms of security, the Millenary Minute Repeater is equipped with a balance-stop system designed to ensuring time-setting that is accurate to the nearest second. The new winding system also features a security device that prevents time-setting while the striking mechanism is in operation, thus avoiding any risk of inappropriate handling.

    Dynamic three-dimensional architecture
Such refined mechanical features naturally deserved to be matched by equally exceptional finishing. The oval-shaped Millenary case in brushed titanium – a material featuring exceptional resonance qualities – is framed by a polished titanium bezel. The various organs within are barely concealed by the anthracite grey hours and minutes subdial offset at 3 o’clock, and by the small seconds at 7 o’clock. Particular care has been lavished on the hand-polished bevelling, on the interior angles and on the concentric circular-grained motif. The movement is also adorned by a horizontal “Côtes de Genève” pattern. This wealth of details is visible both from the top and through the transparent caseback, which together serve to highlight a particularly dynamic three-dimensional architecture. Through its impressive combination of performances and technological accomplishments, the Audemars Piguet Millenary Minute Repeater makes a decisive new contribution to the history of this collection.

Hair trends winter 2010 2011 for women by TONI&GUY

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Hair trends winter 2010 2011 for women by TONI&GUY.

The new season brings with it fusions of styles and eras - think deconstructed couture and high-fashion infused with bespoke street undertones, manifesting in a totally wearable, yet individual DIY approach.

    THE CUT…
Is uber styilised - embracing wiggy synthetic textures, the return of graphic silhouettes is here with exaggerated shapes and experimentation of textures mused by luxurious touchable fabrics such as fur.

Iconic 1930's show girl fast forwarded - beautifully sculptural, it is cropped and short but there is nothing androgynous or masculine about it. Graphic undercuts coupled with face framing fringes, best worn with scarlet lips for a doll-like effect.

Gender-less and strong, short hair makes a significant fashion statement this season - paying homage to great ambassadors such as Bowie. Soft striking quiffs and sleek close cut sides, think boyish and sexy.

Long shapes are alluring and full of attitude with over-processed texture and a playful sense of styling - think unstructured waves and curls and grown out fringes. A girly rebellion!

Simple techniques in stand-out palettes, reminiscent of the iconic female 90's grunge generation, colour embraces concoctions of vintage hues with futuristic subtleties. Colour is bright, bold and beautiful and boasts 'indulgence' with luxurious fluidity and must-touch textures.

    The Redhead
Surreal and sublime - red takes on an anbaric amber infused glow in shades of Tea-stained, Amber Aura and Yellow Oka, the effect is eccentric and enlivened.

    The Brunette
Bold and beautiful, brunettes are rich and striking with cool undertones - it is all about technique, with under-colour proving to be a big story this season. Shades are inky and intense with tones of Indigo Blue, Orchid, Mauve, Deep Violet and Mink, cleverly worked on deep bases of Resin Brown for a high-fashion finish.

    The Blonde
Blondes are innovative and really accentuate colour as the ultimate fashion accessory for this season. Introducing playful hues hidden within to achieve flashes of interest - pastel tones of Candy-floss and cloudy colour fusions of Dusty Rose and Orange Blossom with vintage roots stretching into purified blonde. Neutral tones of Warm Stone and Pranite are perfect for the warmer end of the spectrum.
